Celebrating Jesus' Birthday at VCP

Our classes have been enjoying the Christmas season at VCP in many different ways. We've made special gifts, read the Christmas story, baked cookies, predicted the first snowfall, sang Christmas carols in a gazebo, practiced our very special Christmas Nativity program and much more!

Below are a few photos of these precious moments.

Having a great time baking during Lunch-a-bunch!

Graphing With Our 4-Year Old Class!

Throughout the year, our 4-year-old class will be exploring numbers, counting and organizing data by graphing information. Graphs make counting and comparing meaningful and provide opportunities to explore and discover numbers, letters and letter sounds and other literacy skills. They also provide opportunities for children to develop social skills.

Recently, during 4-year-old Lunch-a-Bunch, students graphed information about the first letter of their name, how many boys were in the classroom vs. the number of girls and more! During these activities, we practiced counting, collecting information, reading results, organizing data and even addition and subtraction!

We will continue graphing throughout the year using themes, holidays and everyday items to compare and sort.

Happy Thanksgiving!

The Valley Christian Preschool Pilgrims and Native Americans recently sat down for a yummy feast in celebration of Thanksgiving! Leading up to this big day, we read the story of the First Thanksgiving, created art projects including Thankful Turkeys, Pilgrim Hats and Native American Headbands and also sang Thanksgiving-themed songs. We hope you enjoy our photos!

A Peek Into Our Classroom

We strongly believe that when children have the freedom to spontaneous play and interact, they explore, solve problems and develop social skills. Below are photos of both our 3-year-old class and 4-year-old class enjoying free play - each day new discoveries and friendships are made! (Click on any photo to make it larger)

Thanksgiving Songs and Finger Plays!

We are learning lots of new and fun songs for Thanksgiving! Please encourage your child to sing these songs at home, too!

I'm a Very Fine Turkey
(Children pretend they have wings)

I'm a very fine turkey and I sing a fine song,
Gobble, gobble, gobble, gobble, gobble...

I strut around the barnyard all day long
and my head goes
Bobble, bobble, bobble!

We're Thankful...
We're thankful for the corn,
We're thankful for the corn,
We're thankful for the corn and more,
We're thankful for the corn.

(Next, name a different food and continue singing)

The Turkey Ran Away
The turkey ran away
before Thanksgiving Day
He said, "They'll make a roast out of me...
if I should stay"

The pumpkin ran away
before Thanksgiving Day
He said, "They'll make a pie out of me...
if I should stay"

The cranberries ran away
before Thanksgiving Day
They said, "They'll make a sauce out of me...
if I should stay"

Mr. Turkey and Mr. Duck
(This is a finger play. Hold up each index finger like they are "talking" to each other. One is Mr. Turkey and one is Mr. Duck.)

Mr. Turkey took a walk one day in the very best of weather.
Along came Mr. Duck and they both talked together.

Gobble, gobble, gobble.
Quack, quack, quack.

Good-bye. Good-bye.

And they both walked back.

Hat Day Parades and Making Music!

Our 4-year-old class enjoys marching in their hat parade!

Our 3-year-old class displays their hats and has fun marching and making music!

Lunch A Bunch for 3 Year Old Class!

We are excited to announce that Lunch-a-Bunch will be starting on November 9th for the 3 year-old class and will continue on most Tuesdays during our 2010-2011 school year.

Lunch-a-Bunch is a great time for students to spend additional time with their classmates and teachers. Included in the additional hour and a half beyond the regular school day is extended play with additional toys, puzzles and games, outdoor play (weather-permitting), and lunch time at the table (students bring a sack lunch). Students really enjoy this extended time and it proves to be beneficial for socialization, extended time to discover through play and additional time to explore more toys, puzzles and games!

If you are interested in signing your child up for Lunch-a-Bunch, please look for the sign-up sheet in the school lobby. Each Lunch-a-Bunch session is $12. We hope that your child will be able to join us during this special time!

A Special Visit From Officer Joe and Drak the Dog!

We had a very special visit from Officer Joe and Drak the K-9 dog! Officer Joe talked with our 4-year-old class about safety and also sang the "Laughing Song" with us as we held our silly smiles that he gave to us. Take a peek at our pictures! We had so much fun!

After Officer Joe's visit, we read a book about jobs and asked the children what they would like to be when they grow up. Some of the answers included: an artist, rescue worker, scientist, office worker, house builder, animal doctor, people doctor and more!

Singing Songs and Having FUN!

Music brings joy, movement, socialization and smiles to each class and we are very excited to share new songs and practice other ones that we know!

We have had a wonderful time singing the following songs:

"The More We Get Together"
"I am Special"
"Way Up High in the Apple Tree"
"I'm an Acorn"
"I Love to Rake"
"Who's Name Is..."

In our 3-year-old class, we have enjoyed singing:
"Grey Squirrel, Grey Squirrel"... Ask us how we swish our bushy tails!

In our 4-year-old class, we have also enjoyed singing:
"Who Took the Cookie from the Cookie Jar?" During this song, we love to choose another classmate and learn each others' names!

In many of these songs, we have enjoyed stretching, moving, shaking and learning hand motions - please encourage your child to sing these songs at home! They are sure to bring a smile to your face!

We are Learning Sign Language!

One of our favorite things to do at Valley Christian Preschool is to learn new words in Sign Language. In our 4-year-old class, we have learned how to sign the following words:

Apple, alligator, bumblebee, butterfly, Bible, cat, dinosaur, elephant, friend, frog and I love you!

When we start a new letter of the week, we also learn the sign for that letter! In some of of songs that we sing during circle time, we also use sign language. We encourage you to practice the words we have learned with your children!

Our Educational Philosophy

Our preschool emphasizes the development of the whole child through active learning situations. We strive for a balanced, nurturing, caring, developmental approach to education for children who are 3, 4 and turning 5 years old.

Our program provides freedom for children to have spontaneous play and interaction, where they make discoveries, explore, solve problems and develop social skills. This, in addition to structured, teacher-directed activities in which children learn to focus attention and function in a group, fosters success and positive self-esteem.

Our curriculum provides opportunities that encourage the social, emotional, artistic, imaginative, physical and spiritual development of a child, while also offering many activities that allow for development in cognitive-academic areas as well as kindergarten-readiness.

Our qualified staff and small class sizes allow each child to develop according to his or her own pace, interest and learning style. We emphasize encouragement as a vital role in each child's development.

However, even if there is a morning delay, we still begin class at the originally scheduled time (9:00am). Although our vacation days typically coincide with Farmington's vacation schedule, we also welcome students from all towns in the surrounding areas including (but not limited to) Avon, Simsbury, Canton, Burlington, Bristol and Plainville. Therefore, our vacation days may not directly align with Farmington Public Schools. However, parents of enrolled students will receive a calendar in August that will outline all vacation days to allow for ample time to plan accordingly.
